Our early interactions
with our father, mother, and siblings influence much of our
behaviors as adults. Participation in a group offers each member
a chance to reenact family of origin roles and expectations.
It also offers the participant the opportunity to become conscious
of these deeply etched memories and feelings. The result of
family reenactment in group can pave the way to new behaviors
and allow a breaking free from long-standing family roles.
Treatment
Philosophy
- The group provides
a shame-free context.
- The group acts
as a container, a safe place to hold feelings and thoughts.
- Groups evolve into
a social microcosm, a miniature representation of each person’s
universe.
- Interpersonal
relationships are important in the development of a healthy
self.
- Interpersonal
relationships, developed as a result of group participation,
provide
a corrective emotional experience.
- Feedback from
others and self-observations are examples of how the corrective
process takes place.
- Depth and meaning,
through emotional experiences in group, become possible and
enhance learning and transformation.
What
will you have to do?
- Agree to attend
weekly sessions of 90 minutes.
- Commit to a
minimum of 16 consecutive sessions.
- See an individual
therapist at least once every 4 weeks while in group.
- Agree to be
present and interact as best you can. It is acceptable to
sit quietly and
observe as part of this learning process.
What
will our sessions be like?
- Participants
will start each session with a “check in,” a brief
statement about how
they are.
- Participants
will have the opportunity to request time to focus on important
issues.
- Sometimes group
members will provide feedback to each other through
feelings and experiences in response to what was shared.
- Sometimes group
interaction will be focused on feelings about each other.
- Participants
will end each session with a “check out,” a brief
statement about how
they are.
