My life with all the joys and struggles as a son, grandson,
brother, father, stepfather, grandfather and husband provides
a rich and humbling experience of living as a man. Therefore
I am committed to learning more about why men have difficulty
feeling and how we can be conscious in an unconscious world.
MY WEBSITE WILL:
- Explore the subject
of masculinity, being male, being a man, and the journey to
manhood.
- Examine how men learn to be men.
- Define what it is to be a healthy man.
- Identify constraining forces that impact the development of
a healthy man.
- Identify the social, political and economic conditions that
force men to stay numb and disconnected from their feelings.
- Recommend what men can do as adults to become healthy.
- Provide an interactive forum to exchange information, ideas,
resources, concerns, and feelings.
IDEAS TO
EXPLORE WHICH ADDRESS THE DIFFICULTY OF BEING MALE IN TODAY’S
WORLD:
Why do men die eight
years younger than women on average in the U.S.?
Why do they have
higher rates of cancer, heart attacks, and suicide, as well
as more substance abuse, risk-taking, and automobile accidents?
Have men been betrayed
by our culture? Susan Faludi’s book Stiffed
addresses her struggle to “understand the perilous voyage
to manhood” undertaken by men. She describes the condition
of the post Second World War American male as a “modern
social tragedy.” She empathetically describes “male
anguish ” as being the result of the “betrayal of
the American man.”
How do war and the
“military industrial complex” affect men? Leo Braudy’s
book From Chivalry To Terrorism, War and the Changing Nature
of Masculinity explores the conscious and unconscious ways
American and European cultures “establish an essential
role for military and warrior virtue in defining masculinity.”
He points to war and masculinity shaped by a long interwoven
history. War “enforces an extreme version of male behavior
as the ideal model for behavior.”
I look forward
to the development and exchange of ideas on these and other
topics related to men’s issues.
